How pre-trial qualitative research can change proposed RCT design: a case study and implications for future research

چکیده
Findings Qualitative findings informed changes to fundamental aspects of trial design and proposed outcome measures. Clinicians’ interpretations of the original interventions were variable, and descriptions of current practice/ terminology consistently differed with assumptions made in the grant proposal and commissioned call for research. New outcomes were recognised, prompted by clinicians’/patients’ priorities. Measuring and reporting these outcomes was deemed crucial for a full trial’s potential to impact future practice. Interviews with clinicians also prompted new ‘in trial’ data collection requirements, as clinicians anticipated potential changes to their clinical practice to accommodate the trial interventions. These changes had potential to impact the primary outcomes, prompting recommendations to measure/record these practices during trial conduct.

Bluebelle study (phase A): a mixed-methods feasibility study to inform an RCT of surgical wound dressing strategies
OBJECTIVES Dressing primary surgical wounds is common, but the implications for surgical site infection (SSI) remain unknown. The Bluebelle study aimed to determine the feasibility of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing 'simple', 'complex' or 'no' dressings on abdominal wounds, as prespecified in a funder's research brief. Bluebelle includes exploratory work (phase A) to inform a pilo...
متن کاملMixing a Grounded Theory Approach with a Randomized Controlled Trial Related to Intimate Partner Violence: What Challenges Arise for Mixed Methods Research?
Little is known about how to systematically integrate complex qualitative studies within the context of randomized controlled trials. A two-phase sequential explanatory mixed methods study was conducted in Canada to understand how women decide to disclose intimate partner violence in emergency department settings. Mixing a RCT (with a subanalysis of data) with a grounded theory approach require...
متن کاملThe experience of adolescents participating in a randomised clinical trial in the field of mental health: a qualitative study
BACKGROUND This descriptive study aimed to investigate adolescents' motivations for participating in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), to explore the understanding that the young people had regarding a number of aspects of the trial design, to examine whether or not they found participation in the trial to be acceptable and what affected this, and to identify whether and how the young people...
متن کاملImproving recruitment of older people to clinical trials: use of the cohort multiple randomised controlled trial design.
There is widespread evidence of under-recruitment of older people to research studies, notably randomised controlled trials of interventions. Study exclusion criteria, ethical dilemmas, patient preference, risk of bias and challenges for treatment comparisons are particular problems faced by researchers. This article describes how more widespread use of the cohort multiple randomised controlled...
